Retention

Congratulations on completing your orthodontic treatment! To preserve your new smile, the next phase—retention—is just as important as the active treatment phase.

Once your braces or aligners are removed, we will provide you with a custom upper and lower retainer to help stabilize the position of your teeth. Wearing your retainer exactly as instructed is key to keeping your teeth aligned while the bone and soft tissues adapt to their new positions.

Why Retainers Matter

  • Teeth naturally want to shift over time
  • Without proper retainer use, your smile can relapse
  • Consistent wear ensures long-term results and protects your investment

Types of Retainers

Hawley Retainers

  • Removable and made of metal wires and durable acrylic
  • Customizable in a variety of colors and patterns
  • Designed to allow minor adjustments over time

Essix (Clear) Retainers

  • Removable, transparent retainers that fit snugly over your teeth
  • Similar in appearance to Invisalign® aligners
  • A discreet option for maintaining your smile

Fixed (Bonded) Retainers

  • A thin wire bonded behind your front teeth
  • Ideal for patients with specific concerns like rotated or spaced teeth
  • Requires careful hygiene but offers continuous support
  • We will determine if this option is right for you

How to Wear & Care for Your Retainers

  • Wear your retainer full time at first, then gradually transition to night-time use
  • Remove before eating, brushing, or flossing
  • Clean your retainers daily with a toothbrush and cool water (avoid hot water and harsh chemicals)
  • Store in a retainer case when not in use to avoid damage or loss
  • Bring your retainers to check-ups so we can monitor fit and function
